Satyananda Yoga

Through the practice of yoga, the tensions are removed and the stage dawns where there is an end to this eternal struggle within.  This is the stage of sublime equanimity.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati

People are attracted to yoga for many reasons.  These reasons go beyond the desire to stretch or become flexible.  Some people may need relief from a physical, mental or emotional problem.  Others may need to learn how to relax or be seeking a spiritual experience.

Whatever the reasons are, practicing yoga has many benefits.  Once you begin your yoga journey you will discover that yoga has the capacity to expand the consciousness and transform your entire being.

Elements of a Satyananda Yoga Class

Asana - through asana practice, the dormant energy potential is released and experienced as increased confidence in all areas of life.  Asanas are performed with meditative awareness and adapted to personal ability.

Pranayama - pranayama practices establish a healthy body, control and balance of the mind and emotions leading to peace and readiness for meditation.  Pranayama awareness is a must for the complete experience of yoga.

Satyananda Yoga Nidra - is practical, systematic and an easily accessible deep relaxation practice. Yoga Nidra relaxes every layer of our complex being.

Meditation - to become the observer allowing the practitioner to explore the content of the mind and go beyond the confines and limitations of the mind. This process develops focus and management in dealing with the consequences in every day life.

The Satyananda Style

The Satyananda style of yoga combines the above elements and binds them with yogic principles which add to the unique flavour of Satyananda Yoga classes.

Students practise at their own pace, with a meditative awareness which is focused on their own experience.  This focus on personal experience in turn develops an awareness of one's own actions and reactions and leads to an unfolding of deeper aspects of the personality.  Teachers encourage a relaxed attitude which is essential to release tension and stress and to restore energy, focus and willpower.  Emphasis is placed on systematic and safe teaching methods which adapt practices to suit the many shapes, sizes and abilities that make up the population.

As an integral yoga, Satyananda Yoga utilises different branches of yoga in its classes.  In doing so, all types of personalities can find a yoga practice that suits them.  Satyananda Yoga provides practical tools for living that are accessible and available to all.  Everyone is welcome in a Satyananda Yoga class.

Unique to Satyananda Yoga are its two residential ashrams at Mangrove and Rocklyn, which offer an experience of yoga beyond the mat.  The ashrams offer the opportunity to delve further into the world of yoga as a lifestyle.
